What is PRP?
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is a form of regenerative medicine that harnesses and amplifies the natural growth factors found in our blood cells to help heal damaged tissue. PRP injections are gaining popularity for a variety of conditions, from sports injuries to hair loss. The treatment consists of two elements; plasma, the liquid portion of blood, and platelets, a type of blood cell that plays an important role in healing throughout the body.
Platelets are well-known for their clotting abilities, whilst also containing growth factors that can trigger cell reproduction and stimulate tissue regeneration or healing in the treated area. Platelet-rich plasma is simply blood that contains more platelets than normal which in turn means more growth factors and therefore improved healing and rejuvenation.
HOW IS PRP MADE?
-
The procedure is performed in our out-patient clinic.
-
It can take up to an hour to complete.
-
PRP injections are prepared by taking anywhere from one to a few tubes of your own blood.
-
It is then spun down in a centrifuge to separates the blood into its various components: red and white blood cells, plasma, platelets, etc.
-
The platelets are collected and concentrated to anywhere from 2 to 8 times their normal number.
-
The platelets are then mixed into a blood plasma liquid base and injected directly into the area of treatment
